Description

Final marker design for my line of Historically Accurate Disney Princess: Fa Mulan. She was a tough one to do research on as there is quite a bit of discrepancy in and about her legendary story. So bear with me and feel free to pass over the description:

The original ballad of Hua Mulan (also Fa Mulan depending on the translation) was published between 480-500 AD during the Tang Dynasty. It was then RE-published in its original form between 1000-1100 AD. The poem that described her incredible feats and legendary justice was originally 81 couplets long.

In the height of the Ming dynasty the ballad was expanded and RE-published AGAIN around 1593.

Disney seems like they couldn't decide what to do with this information or even how to create an accessible story about an incredible female warrior who defused a rebellion that almost overthrew the dynasty she lived in (some accounts say the Wei dynasty others say Tang) so they just threw together all the most notable things that kids would recognize from China.

Because of that... There isn't a real setting for Disney's version of Mulan. The clothes in the film come from the various styles of the Ming dynasty (and some of the colors come from European styles and not traditional Chinese colors). The Forbidden City, where the Emperor in the movies lives, was the home of the royal family during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Great Wall was built between 7th c. BCE and is thought to have been finished circa 1200 AD. The Huns invaded China probably, maybe never... their reign throughout Asia was in the 400s (though they did invade large parts of Russia and Eastern Europe while they were in "power"). Fireworks were created in the 1100s.... And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Basically the whole film has no real setting or history and doesn't really follow the ballad at all other than Mulan was a girl who dressed as a guy and joined the Chinese army... So it made setting the garments for this project really tough.

I settled on designing Mulan's clothing during the Ming Dynasty. Besides the big things like the clothing in the film and palace being set in that time period, the resurgence in the popularity of the ballad and the expansion of the poem led me to design a garment from that dynasty. I stuck with Mulan's pink dress because the colors were common for the time and the silhouette already lent itself to the time.
